  9. Well... My experiences show that they seem to tolerate bad German
  10. even less than English ;-) ...  But it's good to include a couple
  11. of German words in your messages, no matter how silly that may be.
  12. It kind of shows them you respect their language, though you can't
  13. use it fully - or perhaps I'm the one who's silly here =) !

  15. Probably the latter is the truth, but who cares as long as I don't
  16. have to fight with upper memory / EMS -problems 8-) ..

  18. Aside the subject: as people discuss the possibility of using
  19. MiNTnet, I (once again ;-) have to yell my warnings: most people
  20. (so called "ordinary users") won't be able to set the thing up
  21. at all.  A user-friendly, GEM-based installing system is sorely
  22. needed!  Well, I fought the beast yesterday - tried to create
  23. a working setup for DuFTP.  Didn't succeed =(

  25. MiNT -environment itself isn't impossible to install; neither
  26. is MinixFS. They are very different from things people do with
  27. their GEM-programs, but with patience and by reading the docs,
  28. something can normally be achieved.

  30. Trouble begins when you try to install a pure MiNT-system (shells,
  31. UN*X-tools, etc.) on a system tuned up for e.g. multitasking Geneva
  32. environment - like mine.  800x600x256 screen, NVDI, FX-accelerator,
  33. FastRAM, and stuff like that... Things get easily VERY nasty here!
  34. When you have tuned your system to perform optimally under GEM/
  35. whatever GEM-like, you have to de-install almost everything in 
  36. order to get e.g. X-11 for MiNT working.  Boy, what kinds of CRASHES
  37. I experienced yesterday...!  Never before have I been forced to
  38. turn my Falcon off for a minute before new boot-up!

  40. Now, the problem is: Falcon is _above all_ a GEM-computer, no matter
  41. what else can be used in it. So, things like MiNTnet should never
  42. force us users to cripple our GEM-environment: GEM's the thing most
  43. people probably bought their Ataris for. Easy and nice to use.
  44. We really need tools for combining MiNT- and GEM-environments, I
  45. think. It's no use having two separate, only barely co-operating
  46. standards for Atari, when we could have e.g. a multitasking, net-
  47. working, user-friendly, shell-capable GEM-system.

  49. I found out the hard way yesterday, that it isn't possible to
  50. install SLIP-protocol (DIP-package) for MiNTnet without using
  51. a shell. And no shell I tried works in multitasking 800x600
  52. GEM environment... =(  Well, that's my system. The idea of
  53. going back to ST-era: 640x400 mono, single-TOS in order to
  54. get some tools to work, doesn't really make me happy =(.
  55. Perhaps I should try Gemini shell..

  57. The feedback I mostly get from this subject, isn't friendly - I
  58. don't know, why. Maybe I've criticized the user-friendliness of
  59. MiNT-world too hard, and made people angry. But anyway, if we're
  60. going to have a Bad Mood, using e.g. MiNTnet sound- and network
  61. drivers, it would be nice if people could actually install and
  62. use it =) ...
